Don’t Get Hurt... Why You Need to STOP Hard Sparring

In order to prevent CTE (brain degeneration caused by repetitive trauma to the head), hard sparring should only be done at very specific times throughout a fighter’s career:
1. After the fighter has a proficient understanding and ability to defend & counter incoming strikes
2. Two (2) or more weeks before their initial full-contact matches
3. No less than 10 days apart
Note: I am specifically talking about strikes to the head. Personally, I think going hard to the body is not only safe (when done correctly), but it’s also necessary for conditioning. But you can NOT condition the head!

When using the term “hard sparring”, I’m referring to throwing strikes with up to 100% power behind strikes (to the head, specifically). It is necessary for fighters, especially early in their competitive career, to understand how to deal with pressure and stress inoculation — this is when hard sparring should be done under professional supervision. As a fighter progresses through their career, hard sparring should dwindle from their training, as taking heavy shots to the head will have a detrimental effect on their brain and ability to “take a punch.”

How Fighters Use Weird Sounds as Psychological Warfare
It may feel awkward at first, but I encourage you to imitate the noises that boxers and #MuayThai fighters make when they fight. By simply making these weird sounds, you will see noticeable improvements to your:
1. Breathing (0:38)
2. Confidence (1:58)
3. Rhythm & Timing (3:14)
Whether it’s a deep ki-hip from the diaphragm, or a humming to find your #boxing rhythm, these noises work to physically and psychologically beat your opponent. So the next time you’re home alone or out in a field, make some noise!

While Ricardo was in town visiting Philadelphia, we recreated some of the scenes from the famous #Rocky training montage. Here’s what we did each day for a week:
1. 5k run (3.1 miles)
2. Jumprope (10 min)
3. Shadow #boxing (3 rounds)
4. Partner drills (3 rounds)
5. Push-ups (30 x5)
6. Squats (30 x 5)
7. Sprints, ab work, hand-eye coordination, stretching, etc.
